Jura has Only One of this U-Boat Watch

February 25th, 2010

This U-Boat watch is limited to 200 pieces worldwide, and Jura Watches has one. Hot off the press, as the saying goes, is news of a World first from U-Boat.

U-Boat have just launched the World’s first Black Titanium watch, pictured here to the left.

This U-Boat watch is the latest addition to the Classico collection of watches. U-Boat watches, just like their original namesake, are bold, aggressive and oversized, and this particular model is 52 mm and weighs in at only 179g.

This model is waterproof to a depth of 200m. As a result, the exhibition glass that usually shows the entire movement has been reduced in size here to minimize the surface over which high pressure has an effect. The smaller exhibition glass means that the focus is on the balance wheel.

The watch has an incredibly light case-build that contains a Valjoux movement and a power reserve of 44 hours at 28,800 alternations per hour.

This truly amazing watch is limited to 200 pieces, and one is available exclusively to a Jura Watches customer today. If you are not fast enough, you will have to choose another U-Boat watch, there are many to choose from.

A New U-Boat for Baselworld 2010

February 11th, 2010

The new U-Boat - limited to 999 pieces We have just received news of a new limited edition U-Boat watch to be launched at Baselworld, the World’s most important event for the luxury watch and jewellery industry taking place in Switzerland next month.

At Baselworld last year, U-Boat unveiled their U-42. At 65mm the watch required the widest sapphire glass available in the world. With only 29 pieces produced, and each one made of grade-5 titanium, they are very definitely a collectors piece. At Baselworld this year, U-Boat will be launching a 45mm version of the same model, limited to 999 pieces worldwide.

This new smaller model is fitted with the U-28 movement and has a 40 hour power-reserve.

The winding crown is made up of two parts: one is attached to the movement stem whilst the other is hinged to it with a pivot. This gives a flexible joint configuration which allows the crown to protrude considerably from the watch itself for winding and setting, yet returning it to a protected and hidden position. Compare the positions of the crown in the two photographs.

This type of crown diminishes the side clutter when the watch is in action. Also, this crown is important under certain conditions when it is necessary for activities during which gloves are required, such as underwater operations and environmental practise at Arctic temperatures.

The particular make up of the crown for this watch does not compromise the watch being fully water-tight. The crown and stem’s water-tight protection is guaranteed by a clipping gasket that is made of polytetrafluoroethylene, and also by a specifically designed O-ring twin-arrangement. This enables the U-42 dive watch to be water resistant down to a depth of 300m.

The dial is made with a slab in brass. All engravings on the watch are carried out by mechanical pantograph, including the brass dial which is galvanized and finished with a bright enamel paste.

This year’s model may be smaller than last year’s model, but it is every bit as amazing. Remember it is limited to only 999 pieces worldwide, the U-Boat will be available from Jura Watches, London.

The Supermarine Descent – Bremont’s New Dive Watch

January 29th, 2010

Bremont Watches: available from Jura WatchesBremont’s recent Supermarine 500 dive watch turned out to be quite a hit. Following on from this success Bremont watches are about to unveil a new luxury, limited edition dive watch, the Supermarine Descent.

The ‘Descent’ has Bremont’s unique three-piece case construction which allows this dive watch a water resistance of up to a depth of 500m, or 1660ft. But this case retains Bremont’s distinctive curved profile and a size of 42mm. The sapphire crystal protecting the dial is coated on both sides with Bremont’s usual nine layers of anti reflective coating.

As with all good dive watches this model has been extensively tested in the UK by Bremont at their testing facility resulting in the construction of an ‘anti-shock’ movement mount specifically designed to help protect the movement against significant shocks. The Swiss made movement is housed in an anti-magnetic Faraday cage so as to protect the balance, the balance spring and the escapement from any adverse effects of magnetisation.

The Bremont Watch Company is a British company founded by Nick and Giles English. And this model takes its name from the brother’s love of the iconic British aircraft manufacturer responsible for the Supermarine S6B Schneider Trophy Seaplane. And following through with this theme, the watch is limited to 407 pieces, which is the top speed George Stainforth achieved in 1931 with the S6B.

JeanRichards Resurrects their Dive Watches for 2010

January 21st, 2010

jean-richard-watchesOne of Jean Richard’s Novelties for 2010 just unveiled at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva is the Aquascope – a watch specially designed with divers in mind.

As with all JeanRichard watches this new dive watch is powered by the JR1000 in-house movement. This is the modern, self-winding mechanical movement that has been the hallmark of JeanRichard watches since 2004.

The Aquascope has a stainless steel polished and satin-finished case. To house the brand’s in-house movement, this model also has the brand’s signature tonneau shaped case, that is 44.50 x 40 x 11.85mm. The dial is protected with a convex, colourless and anti-reflective crystal treatment. Besides the usual features typical of the JeanRichard brand, this dive watch also has some great features that make this particular dive watch stand out.

Whereas most dive watches have unidirectional bezels, the Aquascope features a bidirectional bezel. And so that the bezel cannot be accidentally adjusted, the crown at nine o’clock has to be unscrewed first. The external bezel features a 60-minute scale, with 120 teeth that enables half-minute settings on dive times. The water resistance of this watch is 300 meters.

The Aquascope dive watch is a homage to JeanRichard’s unique dive watches that were produced in the 1960s.

Sinn Dive Watches and Tegiment Technology

January 8th, 2010

Sinn WatchesSinn have just recently released a very special edition of their Sinn U1 collection of dive watches: the Sinn U1 black tegimented with white dial. The U1 collection of Sinn watches was released three years ago, and since then the most requested feature has been for an all-tegimented watch. At that time the standard Sinn U1 only had a tegimented bezel.

This new dive watch is not only the first Sinn U1 that has an all black case, it is also the first Sinn U1 that has a fully tegimented case, bezel, crown and case back.

Sinn U1 watches are made from the same steel that is used in the construction of the outer hull of German submarines. This steel is not only extremely resistant to sea water, it also has the highest anti-magnetic qualities.

The tegiment technology is not simply an applied substance that coats the steel in an attempt to provide a protective layer. Rather, the steel itself is hardened using a special engineering process. This process increases the steel’s resistance to corrosion, and provides protection against scratching.

Using this technology Sinn’s dive watches have a hardness that is six to nine times harder than standard steel.

Sinn dive watches are available from Jura Watches, London, UK.

Parmigiani takes Watch of the Year for 2009, the Public Choice

November 17th, 2009

parmigianiIn October 2009 the popular Swiss magazine l’Hebdo and their off-shoot Montres Passion sponsored a competition for a series of awards for 2009. Parmigiani Fleurier’s Pershing Astéria watch was awarded the highly coveted title of Watch of the Year 2009, as voted for by the public. Founded in 1996, this award confirms the Parmigiani brand’s rapidly growing reputation as a master producer of fine, handcrafted timepieces.

The Pershing Astéria was created in 2008 to mark the partnership between Pershing, the Italian yacht manufacturer, and Parmigiani Fleurier. The watch is one model of the Pershing collection, a series of sporty timepieces specifically designed with the ocean and the world of yachting in mind.

Having been awarded the Prix du Public 2009, the Pershing Astéria is testament to the success of this collection as a whole, launched just over a year ago.

The watch has a number of original features and design details that draw their inspiration from the ocean. The case and bracelet is made using white gold, with a mother of pearl, blue dial. The chronograph hand is decorated with a small stylised octopus at one end. The small second hand is a starfish which rotates in time with the seconds. These design elements are intended to reflect the deep, crystal-clear water of the ocean, and the relationship between Parmigiani Fleurier and Pershing.

The watch is water resistant to 100 metres, and it also has all the usual characteristics found in the Pershing diving chronograph models.

Swiss Technology & Italian Design: Panerai Watches

November 13th, 2009

panerai-watchesIn 1860 Giovanni Panerai (1825-1897) opened the first watchmaker’s shop in the Italian city of Florence. He also made contact with some of the most prestigious and established of Swiss watch manufacturers. The family business grew from strength to strength and today Panerai watches bring together the best of Swiss technology and Italian design.

Over the years Panerai have produced some exceptional and lasting timepieces. From the Radiomir, created for the commandos of the Italian Navy in 1936, to the more contemporary Ferrari Collection, produced under license of Ferrari Spa by Panerai.

The Ferrari Collection has a number of different models, illustrated here to the left is just one of these – the Ferrari Granturismo GMT FER00003. Each one includes the iconic Ferrari logo, the prancing stallion at 12 o’clock.

In between these two milestones in Panerai’s watch making history is their Luminor Collection. The first of the Luminor watches was created in 1950, and also designed under commission for the Italian Navy. As a military dive watch, it has features specifically suited to conditions necessary for a dive watch. For instance, there was a hand-wound mechanical movement that had an eight-day power reserve. This enabled the frequency of winding operations to be reduced. An innovative feature then because, the fewer winding operations meant a lower risk of water seepage when divers rewound their watches.

These three ranges, the Radiomir, the Luminor and the Ferrari, continue to make up the brand’s core; and there are other models that are as distinctive. Panerai watches are available from The Watch Gallery in London.

New Diving Watches from Sinn

October 15th, 2009

thumb_UX-S-GSG-9-EZM-2B-newSinn watches, a German specialist watchmaker, has just launched 5 new watches – one of which is for diving (models UX-S and UX-S-GSG). Sinn pride themselves in producing watches that perform under extreme and adverse conditions. Not surprisingly then, their UX model series are the official timepieces for the maritime squad of the German GSG 9 Special Forces – hence the name of the new model.

What makes Sinn’s diving range unique is their specially developed HYDRO technology. The watches are filled with a patented oil that makes the watch-face non-reflective underwater, and eliminates fogging. This feature, and the sapphire crystal glass with an anti-reflective coating, means the dial can be read at any angle.

thumb_UX-S-EZM-2B-newThe cases of these watches are treated with a patented coating technology that not only ensures the timepiece is significantly more robust, but allows for a black PVD coating that makes the watch suitable for everyday use, but eliminating the flaking so common in coloured coatings.

A temperature-stabilized chronometer quartz movement enables this watch to function reliably between -20 and +60 degrees Celsius.

The movement has a pressure resistance to a depth of 5000 m, and the case to a depth of 12000 m.

Other features include a captive diver´s bezel with 60-minutes-scale and luminous triangle.
