Giuliano Mazzuoli Creates the Paul Newman Contagiri

March 10th, 2010

Giuliano Mazzuoli created 25 Paul Newman watches to be auctioned for Newman's Foundation: Hole in the Wall CampsIn 2009 the strikingly different and innovative Contagiri from Giuliano Mazzuoli won the Dutch Horloges magazine’s ‘Watch of the Year Award’, in one of the men’s watches category. What makes Giuliano Mazzuoli watches so unique is that their design is based on a pressure gauge found on cars and machines. To say that Giuliano Mazzuoli likes auto racing and racing cars is perhaps an understatement. But it is this passion that has been used to help others.

Mazzuoli describes the moment he received the first prototype of the Contagiri: “When I received the first prototype of ‘Contagiri’ I felt a strong desire to show it to someone that I have always admired and that like me, really loves auto racing.”

That person he was referring to is Paul Newman, another man renowned for his passion for cars and racing. Mazzuoli got to meet Newman, and to give Newman his dream watch. Paul Newman wanted to auction the watch for his foundation: Hole in the Wall Camps. Giuliano Mazzuoli went a step further and provided 25 watches for auction.

Hole in the Wall Camps provides children with serious illnesses a medically safe but at the same time a magical environment of fun and adventure away from the realities of hospital beds and doctors’ offices they are often so used to. These camps are the work of Paul Newman, and they are also made possible by thousands of volunteers and generous donors. So far, over 114 000 children from 33 countries have attended 11 of these camps, free of charge.

A Space-walk for Seiko Ananta Watches

January 13th, 2010

seiko-ananta-watchesThe inspiration behind the Seiko Ananta watches lies in the ancient art of Japanese sword-making. The Katana sword is not only admired for its effectiveness as a weapon, it is also highly prized for its artistry and beauty. These are the qualities that Seiko have brought to bare in their Ananta collection of luxury Spring Drive or Automatic timepieces.

The Spring Drive is a luxury watch mechanism with a regulator that generates nearly no friction. The unique glide motion enables the second hand to move smoothly around the dial, precisely and silently – without the classic ‘tick’. ensure a timepiece with greater accuracy and increased longevity; an accuracy that can be measured to one second a day.

In September the Seiko Spring Drive Spacewalk watch that was taken into space by Richard Garriott was auctioned by Antiquorum in New York. Only 6 of these were created for the 12 day Space Mission ‘Soyuz TMA-13′.

The sale of this watch with an extraordinary history exceeded both the reserve and the estimate prices, realising USD 45,600. Seiko has donated these proceeds to two of Richard Garriott’s chosen charities: the Nature Conservancy and the Challenger Center for Space Science Education.

But the Spring Drive Spacewalk story does not end there. Early in 2010 Seiko will release a commemorative edition limited to 100 pieces. Richard Garriott’s intention has always been that the watch that SEIKO created for his space adventure should be made available to a wider public as a way of promoting the idea of space-travel and the furtherance of space science. The limited edition commemorative timepiece will turn Garriott’s wish into a reality.

Seiko Ananta watches are available from Jura Watches, London.

An Environment Friendly Watch that Helps Refugees

November 10th, 2009

Obaku-Refugees-watchObaku Harmony watches are loaded with conscience.

The Obaku brand may only have been introduced two years ago, but now the brand has worldwide appeal. The last two years have been a difficult time to launch a new brand, but Allan Jensen, Obaku’s brand manager, says “I think it is [our] combination of great design, a timely message and good price points that has brought us to where we are.” And Obaku has two powerful messages.

Every year over a billion new watches are sold worldwide. And most of these have batteries that contain environmentally damaging mercury and lead. Obaku is taking a first step towards a more ‘green’ solution for all their watches. From now on, all their watches will be produced with environmental friendly batteries.

And, in another move towards greater social responsibility, Obaku have joined forces with the non-profit organisation Refugees United; a charity that works towards reuniting refugees with their families. There are currently some 37 million refugees in the world.

Obaku have produced a specially designed ‘Obaku Refugees‘ watch, and donate proceeds from the sale of this watch to the charity.
The Obaku Refugees watch, released this year, has a classic and simple design. It comes with a kevlar strap and a titan glass – the hardest glass available. It is perfect therefore for any occasion.

Obaku watches are a Danish designed watch brand, but with a distinctively Japanese philosophy.
