Giuliano Mazzuoli Creates the Paul Newman Contagiri

March 10th, 2010

Giuliano Mazzuoli created 25 Paul Newman watches to be auctioned for Newman's Foundation: Hole in the Wall CampsIn 2009 the strikingly different and innovative Contagiri from Giuliano Mazzuoli won the Dutch Horloges magazine’s ‘Watch of the Year Award’, in one of the men’s watches category. What makes Giuliano Mazzuoli watches so unique is that their design is based on a pressure gauge found on cars and machines. To say that Giuliano Mazzuoli likes auto racing and racing cars is perhaps an understatement. But it is this passion that has been used to help others.

Mazzuoli describes the moment he received the first prototype of the Contagiri: “When I received the first prototype of ‘Contagiri’ I felt a strong desire to show it to someone that I have always admired and that like me, really loves auto racing.”

That person he was referring to is Paul Newman, another man renowned for his passion for cars and racing. Mazzuoli got to meet Newman, and to give Newman his dream watch. Paul Newman wanted to auction the watch for his foundation: Hole in the Wall Camps. Giuliano Mazzuoli went a step further and provided 25 watches for auction.

Hole in the Wall Camps provides children with serious illnesses a medically safe but at the same time a magical environment of fun and adventure away from the realities of hospital beds and doctors’ offices they are often so used to. These camps are the work of Paul Newman, and they are also made possible by thousands of volunteers and generous donors. So far, over 114 000 children from 33 countries have attended 11 of these camps, free of charge.

A Visit to JeanRichard Watches

December 10th, 2009

JeanRichard-watchesTowards the end of November JeanRichard Manufacture played host to one of the legends of the motorcycle world, Giacomo Agostini.

Agostini, a brand Ambassador for JeanRichard watches, is seen here with a Bressel 1665 Chronograph Rattrapante Foudroyante on his wrist taking the opportunity to explore JeanRichard’s workshops, and see some of the wonderful watches produced there in the making.

Besides the watches and the workshops there would have been much to keep Agostini occupied on his visit to JeanRichard Manufacture.

JeanRichard is located in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and as we reported here a few days ago, this city along with La Locle was recently added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites in recognition of the towns watch-making and architectural heritages. JeanRichard is linked to one of the founders of the watch making industry in the local mountains of Neuchâtel, Daniel JeanRichard.

To demonstrate a continuous commitment to the history of watch making JeanRichard have created its own Museum. Here they do not simply display JeanRichard watches, but the hidden technical aspects of the watch making industry. For example, the tools and machinery used from the 17th century until today outline for visitors to the Museum the evolution of watch making in the area.

JeanRichard watches are available from The Watch Gallery, London.

Zenith Watches & Mahatma Gandhi

November 16th, 2009

zenith-watchesZenith watches are designed and assembled in the company’s own workshops in Le Locle, Switzerland. Thus Zenith is legitimately entitled to use the word manufacture in the company name, as in ‘Zenith Manufacture’. This tradition has its roots in the French language where the word manufacture means ‘manufacturing company’.

But Zenith watches have another reason to be particularly proud, and that is their association with Mahatma Gandhi – the pre-eminent political and spiritual leader of India during the Indian independence movement. Gandhi lived a very modest existence and wore the traditional Indian dhoti and shawl, which was woven with yarn he had hand spun himself. He ate simple vegetarian food, and did not own many material objects.

As can be seen in the photograph above, one of the few things Gandhi did have was a Zenith watch – a pocket alarm watch, shown in detail below.

Georges Favre-Jacot, who founded the company in 1865, was very keen to see his watches widely distributed. And so he travelled far and wide promoting Zenith watches.

The early 20th century saw the expansion of travel, for pleasure and business. Favre-Jacot believed that having a reliable watch and being able to wake up on time were essential requirements for all travellers. From 1915 onwards the pocket alarm watch became an iconic watch in the Zenith collection.

Bremont Watches Norton Launch

October 25th, 2009

Bremont Norton Launch Event Bremont Watches and Norton held a launch party at the Jura watches store this week to show off their limited edition Norton watch. The watch is limited to 200 pieces and is already selling out fast after its launch. The party was attended by Bremont founding brothers Nick and Giles English and their ambassadors Charley Boorman, Graham Bell and Marc Koska.  Over 100 VIP’s and press attended the launch and got to view the new Norton watch as well as the new Martin Baker and Supermarine 500 watches due for launch soon.

Highlight of the night was Charley Boorman’s speech, which involved eating something rather unsavery. Outside the store was the sold out limited edition Commando bike, which was a stunning piece of engineering and caused blockade on the streets of Mayfair.

There was a prize draw on the evening and one lucky man walked away with a Norton leather jacket and other things, can you get cooler than a Norton jacket? I dont think so.
